Following a Lead
Our investigation into the Dark Brotherhood traitor is actually pretty easy. We just need to go to the next dead drop and catch whoever’s been placing the false notes. The dead drop is a barrel by the big decorate lake in Anvil. Just go somewhere with a line of sight on the barrel and wait for an hour. A messenger should come up and put the note in the barrel.
Go ahead and talk to him. He’ll panic and reveal the location of his employer. It seems that we need to make a quick trip to the Anvil Lighthouse.
On a separate note, this greedy messenger decided to just keep the 500 gold that we’re owed for Ungolim. If you have a decent Sneak skill, you can pickpocket it off of him as he walks away. You can also use a Frenzy spell and make the guards chase him down for you after he goes crazy. The messenger also isn’t too tough, so you might be able to do a one-hit stealth kill. If worse comes to worse, just use poison on your blade to limit the bounty to an assault bounty. You’re trading 40 gold for 500, so it’s a smart move.
When you’ve got your hard earned gold from the messenger, go down to the Anvil docks and follow the marker to the Lighthouse keeper, Ulfgar Fog-Eye. Note that you don’t have to do anything special to get the key. Just ask him for it and tell him that the Dark Brotherhood believes that it is in his best interest. He’ll happily hand it over. He hates the tenant and doesn’t want any trouble.
The entrance to the Lighthouse Cellar is outside. Go around back and use the key to enter the cellar and enjoy the sights. It seems that one very crazy man lives here. There’s some victims and dead animals in the front room. He keeps a crazed dog in his bedroom. You’ll need to kill it. The only truly important thing is the large “Traitor’s Diary” on the nightstand close to the shrine to his mother.
If you want, you can also pick up the Mother’s Head for something slightly special.
Now that you have some evidence (it turns out that the traitor was hiding in the Black Hand all along), you can go to Applewatch to report your success to Lucien.

Applewatch - A Surprise
Unfortunately, it seems like Lucien greatly overestimated the security of a secluded farmhouse that was connected to his last official mission. The Black Hand has already tortured and killed Lucien. There’s nothing that you can do. Take the Black Hand robes.
If you want a slight easter egg, you can drop the Mother’s Head onto the ground. The traitor, Mathieu Bellamont, will be the only one to freak out about it. There’s nothing that you can do about it now though. You’re stuck until he officially reveals his true colors.
Just wait until it’s between midnight and 3AM and talk to Arquen. The surviving members of the Black Hand will go to see the Night Mother to pick the new Listener. My only advice is that you travel light. Be able to carry about 100 pounds of gear out with you. There’s some nice stuff in the Night Mother’s crypt and you only get one chance to get it.

Honor Thy Mother - Saving the Night Mother
Once you talk to Arquen, the wheels will be set in motion for the grand conclusion. You’ll automatically travel to the Lucky Old Lady statue in Bravil. It seems that this is actually the entrance to the Night Mother’s crypt. Once they finish the ritual, go down the trap door to watch the final scenes.
The Night Mother will expose their stupidity and trigger Mathieu Bellamont’s attack. Once you regain control, get your shield up and focus on well aimed counterattacks. Arquen will help you and she’s fairly useful. Note that the Black Hand robes that Mathieu is wearing offer no real protection, so he’ll die quickly to any real weapon. Once he’s dead, you’re basically home free.
As the only surviving and competent member of the Black Hand left, you’ll be appointed Listener with Arquen as your Speaker. You’ll have a chance to loot the Night Mother’s crypt. Grab the offerings mixed in with the small skeletons. There are some nice alchemical ingredients there. There are also three large chests in the corners. They look like coffins but are labeled as chests. Loot them for some nice enchanted armor and weapons. Also check Bellamont’s dagger. It might be enchanted and worth a little money. When you’re satisfied, talk to the Night Mother to be teleported to the Cheydinhal Sanctuary.

Whispers of Death - Becoming the New Listener
T alk to Arquen once you’re back in the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. She’ll spell out your duties as Listener. If you want, you can go to the Lucky Old Lady statue once a week and receive the name of a person who wants to contact the Dark Brotherhood. If you pass this along to Arquen, she’ll make the arrangements and pass along 200 gold as a payment. This is basically free money once a week, if you want it.
After a few days pass, Arquen will recruit new murderers to join the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. You can order them to follow you around and help out. If one dies, they will respawn after a bit of time has passed. There should be three. A main in the entrance hall, a woman in the Living quarters and a male Khajiit in the Training Room.
Note that the woman in the Living Quarters is a fairly useful merchant and has taken M’raaj-Dar’s place. She sells his old spells and is willing to buy just about anything from you at a high price. This concludes the Dark Brotherhood questline in Oblivion. Enjoy being the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood and the perks that it entails.
