In this part we will look at how you can live as a vampire race in-game and the penalties involved.

    Playing the Vampire: Penalties

After you have been infected and let the disease run its course, you will belong to a particular bloodline, or clan, depending on which vampire you were bitten by. This can be accidental, if you wish for an element of surprise since each clan has quests based on different aspects. You can also choose your clan depending on what types of quests and items you would like to receive. The various clans and quest will be discussed in a later guide.

Once you are actually a vampire you will reap benefits and suffer penalties depending on the peculiarities of this particular race. In Normal cases, if you wish to restore your health in game you simply rest and this will re-generate you. This isn’t possible with a vampire however, and your only way of re-gaining lost health is to drink potions or use the vampiric spells in your arsenal, such as drain or absorb health spells.

Moreover, as it’s common knowledge, sun and daylight actually damages vampires, and this also happens in the game. When it is light and sunny your character will keep on loosing a small amount of health points as long as he isn’t inside his/ her lair; you will loose up to 5 points of health per second, an effect which takes place after 6.00am game-time. The amount of points varies depending on time of day, for instance when the sun is highest, at 12.00pm, you will loose the maximum 5 points of health. This effect is known as Sun Damage in the game, and technically it belongs to the school of destruction, although the effect is only found in vampire creatures. A practical way to avoid all this is to stay indoors between those times, and hit the rest button to ‘wait’ for the number of hours until 8.00pm.

Another downside is that not many people in-game wish to hold a conversation with such creatures. As long as quests involve talking to a person, which is the majority of main game quests, you cannot complete them if you are playing this race. You can only talk to a small number of characters in the game, such being Mages who are not averse to talking to you. This includes Telvanni Tower mages. All the other characters will other ignore you, or in the case of guards or protectors, attempt to chase you and kill you.

In the next guide we will look at the Attribute rewards in playing a vampire.
