The first part of Character Creation in Morrowind. We will look at attributes and how to shape your character.

  • slide 1 of 2

Attributes in Morrowind, as in any other RPG game, define the nature of your character, his initial abilities and what he or she is most inclined towards (i.e. fighting, magic or other). There are eight separate attributes in the game which you can assign points to, which are considered the primary attributes for your character to advance. Other attributes are present but they will not be as important as the first eight (such as reputation).

Depending on which race you’ve chosen, your starting values vary in your attributes. For instance an Orc will have stronger Endurance than an Altmer, which is an elven race and naturally more fragile, or oppositely an Altmer will have higher intelligence (and thus better modifiers) than an Orc.

Attributes are used to determine in game skills, such as sneak for instance. Each time you assign points to separate attributes, these skills increase respectively.

    Main Attributes

Agility – This determines your combat abilities (how often you will hit your enemy, similar to dexterity) and some associated skills. The main skills affected are Block, Light armour and Marksman skills which will be explained in detail in the next guides.

Endurance – Controls your starting health and fatigue, or how long you are able to run and fight adequately. Your endurance is divided by 10 and added to your current health.

Intelligence – As usual, important for magic users as it sets how much magicka energy you start with. Some races have a natural modifier to magicka, which is multiplied to your intelligence and added.

Luck – Not particularly important as a primary attribute since it doesn’t really affect things in an important way. However, the chance of lock picking or creating a potion through alchemy is increased with this skill.

Personality – Allows you to persuade people, the use of some schools of magic and being able to sell and buy items at convenient prices.

Speed – Determines how fast you can move (and hence run), along with skills such as Unarmored, Hand-to Hand or Athletics. Some races have more natural speed than others.

Strength – Quite important since it allows you to carry equipment first and foremost, determining how much weight you can hold in your inventory. It also sets your health and fatigue, and allows your weapon to deteriorate if you are stronger, hence hitting with more force.

Willpower – Determines your maximum fatigue as well as your ability to cast spells related to any magic school. It also helps you resist effects such as Paralysis.
